April 2011

A Right Royal Occasion

Peacehaven enjoyed a three-day royal wedding extravaganza, beginning with a banquet.

The residents received their invites from “Queen Elizabeth” the week prior and were told to come wearing their Sunday Best.

When it was time all the V.I.P residents were welcomed into the dining room by Ann, Alan and two cheerful beef-eaters.

The room was decorated for royalty with a red, blue and white theme; tables were set with menus and red and white roses, and balloons and Union Jacks hung from the ceiling.

As dinner was being finished, Frances made an announcement that a very special guest would be joining us for dessert. Who else walked in but Her Royal Highness “The Queen” herself! She (and her corgy puppy) were kind enough to visit us on her brief trip passing through Auckland Airport. The residents put on their best behaviour as she did the rounds.

The next day we held our long-anticipated Bridal Parade, with staff and friends of Peacehaven modelling 35 wedding and bridesmaids dress styles throughout the ages. We set up chairs either side of the corridor to make our catwalk. Ann was our commentator and Alan and Colin acted as “father of the bride(s)”! The high point of the parade was the modelling of Marj, Noeline and Mary’s dresses who married in 1946, 1945 and 1940 respectively.

After all the models came down for the final parade, Anne and Les Lumb, who will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary this year,  were given the honour of cutting Kate and William’s wedding cake. Then all the residents and their fifty-odd visitors moved to the dining room to enjoy wedding cake, cucumber sandwiches and cream puffs.

Our royal focus finished on the wedding day with a high tea with all the trimmings. The tables were set with ornamental teapots and fine china teacups, which the ladies especially enjoyed sticking their little ‘pinkies’ through the handles.

That afternoon everyone retired to the Kinross Lounge to watch footage from the day before.

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to these special events. We would like to express our gratitude to the Glen Eden Playhouse, who kindly lent us most of the dresses; to those who lent and/or modelled dresses, and to Diane, Judy and Trish who co-ordinated the changing room. Thank you also for those of you who provided resident’s wedding photos for our display.

Across these three days we took over 500 photos. We would like to show you the best of these so we will be putting a slideshow on our website (www.peacehaven.co.nz - then click “Photos”) for you to view.

Easter Raffle

Earlier in the month we announced the winners of our Easter Raffle. It was an all round in-house victory with Vyonnett taking out the top prize, Steve coming second and our activities assistant Margaret coming in third. A total of $400 was collected from ticket sales and we have sent this off to the NZ Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal- subsequently we have received a letter of thanks.

For Easter morning tea Carol served up some traditional Simnel Cake- with eleven dots of marzipan on top to represent the apostles (minus Judas).
