August 2010

A Musical Month

The Te Atatu Men’s Choir performed on the 9th. They sang Gettting to Know You, You Raise Me Up and the Hippopotamus Song among others.

Jim Sparey is a Frank Sinatra style singer who kept the residents entertained with songs like Can’t Help Falling in Love with You, That’s Amore, Ramblin’ Rose, Welcome to My World and Save the Last Dance.

The Grey Warblers from Mt Albert Baptist came and sang gospel tunes and enjoyed afternoon tea with everyone.

Residents also enjoyed listening to Alan Pitts on the piano and an opera DVD called Celtic Woman featuring Hayley Westenra.

Watch this space…

The New Zealand Aged Care Association (NZACA) is holding its annual conference in September and as part of the opportunities the conference provides is a series of Awards for “Excellence in Care”. All members are invited to participate (over 550 facilities through New Zealand) and this year Frances and Rebekah decided that they would enter Peacehaven into the “Community Connections” category.

We are delighted to report that we are one of four finalists in this award category. We have to give a presentation to our fellow members during the conference and await their decision, SO, watch this space and we will let you know the result in next month’s newsletter.

Knitting work acknowledged

There are few moments in the day that we don’t see Mavis Hughes with a bundle of wool and knitting needles in hand. Since coming to Peacehaven in September 2008, Mavis has knitted “literally thousands” of woollen squares as a service to the Waiheke RSA Women’s Group. The squares get collected up and crocheted into large woollen blankets and sent to charities.

On the 5th of August she received a special letter from the secretary of the RSA acknowledging Mavis and thanking her for her “tremendous effort at your age [94].”

She was happy to read that her knitting has benefited the Middlemore Kids Trust, The Health Trust in the Solomon Islands and Hospice NZ.

Mavis is also kept busy by nurturing the beautiful flowers that greet you at the reception door.

A and A have been away

Alan and Ann along with 3 year old Emily Grace (David and Susan’s daughter)  joined  Keryn and husband Jason in a happy welcome to little Taylor Ann one day after her arrival in the world in London on August 7th 2010.

Special Anniversary

Les and Anne Lumb celebrated sixty-four   years of marriage on the 10th. Well done!
