February 2010

Annual Mission Bay Picnic

A grey sky and a bit of wind wasn’t enough to deter us from venturing out for our annual beach picnic to Mission Bay.

After twenty-seven residents had boarded the buses and all the walkers, tables, chairs, lunches, flasks and sunhats were packed, it was beach-bound.

Chinese New Year Celebration

We welcomed in the Year of the Tiger with a special luncheon:

“Fortune cookies”!

Chinese lanterns

Nell’s fortune cookie
reads “Life is uncertain.
Eat dessert first.”

Peacehaven placed in Christmas Competition

Every year our industry magazine, InSite, holds a competition to find the aged care facilities with the best Christmas celebrations. The entries- received from all over New Zealand- are judged on community connections; staff involvement; resident interaction; decorations and theme inside; decorations and theme outside and innovation. 2009 was the first year we entered and we are delighted to have been placed 3rd out of many entries. The judges said “Top family Christmas Party complete with a play put on by the residents. The handmade decorations and cards were a treat. Also notable were the hands on the Christmas tree made out of tracing each resident’s hand and pinning the illustrations to a board in the shape of a Christmas tree. The kindergarten visits and ‘individual memories’ placemats were special too.” We received a $200 gift card.

Other Activities

  • We hosted (and won!) a rather rowdy Round Robin against Taupaki Gables.
  • We have been using crepe paper, needles and thread to make multi-coloured flowers to put on our Easter Bonnets (which we will be making next month).

Special Mention

Caregiver Margaret Aldous is about to represent the upper North Island in lawn bowls. The competition is going to be held in Whangerei in the first week of March. Best of luck!

“Aging” of Accounts

Some family members have pointed out that the “aging” of the monthly accounts is incorrect. After discussions with our software provider it was discovered that we were missing out a crucial step when loading the data and that caused the “wild” aging data. Sorry about that folks but just ignore the aging until it corrects itself over the next few accounts.

ACC Workplace Safety

Last month we went through an independent audit of our workplace to assess the level of commitment to health and safety.
We have just been notified that we have attained a secondary level (there are three levels) and this entitles us to a 15% discount on our ACC workplace cover levy. A very positive outcome for Peacehaven. We only have a few items to complete to give us the top (third) level so we will work towards that during the year.
