Winter Solstice

Instead of lamenting the coming of winter, we decided to be positive and embrace it with a Solstice celebration on the 23rd. We set the tables with blue napkins and silver menus and placed little snowmen in the corridors.

The lovely spicy aroma of freshly mulled wine that drifted from the kitchen helped everyone into the spirit; as did the rich beef hot-pot, cheesy mashed potato and vegetable dinner.

Toasts were proposed to good health and happiness throughout the colder months.

Women’s Institute Choir

We’ve been doing very well for music this month. The lavender-clad ladies of the Women’s Institute Choir came to entertain us on the 9th. They kept us singing along to classics like “Summertime” and “Memory” from Cats.

The amusing part of the afternoon was when “Daisy” performed and finished her dance by gleefully perching herself on an unsuspecting Fred and Steve! Tea and scones followed and the choir members mingled with the residents.

Kaurilands Primary School Choir

The children from the Kaurilands Primary School Choir delighted us with renditions of
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Red Red Robin, It’s a Small World After All and She Wore an Itsy Bitsy Bikini. We were all very impressed with their beautiful voices- obviously the result of a lot of hard work and practise.

Baptist Youth Visit

The 11-13 year olds group from Blockhouse Bay Baptist came to visit us on a Sunday morning. The kids happily interacted with the residents and escorted them to morning tea, during which they gave out hand-made cards and sang a song.

Changes in fees

We have been told that the negotiations for this years fees have been completed. The fee increase that the Auckland District Health Board will pay from 1st July 2010 is 1.73%. This will only affect residents who are “private paying” as the ADHB will automatically adjust other residents payment. I will write to individual residents when I find out the exact dollar increase to arrange for automatic bank authorities to be changed.
