Cup Fever!

We celebrated Melbourne Cup Day with a twist- literally.

Each resident was given a horse on a shaft of wood, attached to a roll of string. The horses were aligned on one side of the dining room and the residents on the other. Residents had to twist and wind the string around the roll fast enough to be the first horse home.

Four intense heats were held. The sheer determination was evident on many residents’ faces as tongues were poked out and eyebrows furrowed. Each time the finish line approached excited shrieking and cheering broke out. Nell S and Muriel won two races each.

It was time for the finalists to assemble. The stakes were high. The race was off…..but for about five seconds! A rerun was called for after one jockey cited interference from an enthusiastic spectator. The vet gave the horses a quick once-over and the race began again. The verdict was reached as jockey Nell Scott wound up her way to victory for the final time.

The judges bestowed upon her the highly coveted Peacehaven Cup.

That night at 5pm the residents watched the Melbourne Cup race eagerly. “Shocking” won (Muriel’s horse) earning her a nice haul.

Family Christmas Party

We kicked off our festive celebrations with the Family Christmas Party on the 29th. The halls were decked out with all kinds of decorations for the over sixty family members who attended. Lynne Walters provided Christmas music out in the hallway.

After a Christmas poem by Ola it was straight into the play. “Three Industrious Swine” featured the acting talents of Mavis (The Pig Bricklayer), Gloria (The Pig Farmer), Steve (the big bad wolf), Olive (Grandma Pig) and Marion and Ces as Mr and Mrs Pig.

Family members and residents then dispersed into different parts of Peacehaven where they were served a tasty finger food dinner.
