November 2011

Melbourne Cup fever!

We celebrated Melbourne Cup Day in Peacehaven way.
Each resident was given a horse on a shaft of wood, attached to a roll of string. The horses were aligned on one side of the dining room and the residents on the other. Residents had to twist and wind the string around the roll fast enough to be the first horse home.

The sheer determination was evident on many residents’ faces as tongues were poked out and eyebrows furrowed.

The verdict was reached as jockey Ken Wood wound up his way to victory in the final race. Volunteer, Merilyn bestowed upon him the highly coveted Peacehaven Horse Race Cup. Bev Auckram and Joan Fenton were the runners up.

Music to lighten the heart

We had ‘Piano and Singing’ with Wendy, our entertainer, on the 4th. Wendy played piano and sang classical songs featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber Operas.

On the 12th, Grey Warblers from Mt Albert Baptist Church visited us and sang gospel songs for the residents.

On the 18th, Chris Bligh mesmerised us with his melodies like “Good Night I’ll See You in My Dreams”, “Happy Days are Here Again” and many more.

Family Christmas Party

Spending time with your family is one of the best ways to celebrate. We kicked off our festive celebrations with the Family Christmas Party on the 24th. The halls were decked out with all kinds of decorations and more than 50 family members who attended enjoyed it thoroughly.

Lynn Walters, the entertainer, provided us with fabulous live music ranging from nostalgia to modern. Lynn also involved the visitors to accompany her singing.

Family members and residents were dispersed into different parts of Peacehaven where they were served a tasty finger food dinner that Carol and the kitchen team produced.

We have many photos of residents and their families at the Christmas Party. Please e-mail at alan@peacehaven.co.nz if you would like the copies e-mailed direct to you.

Thank you to everyone who organised this hugely successful event – the residents, visitors and the staff had a marvellous time.

In Brief

~ Heidi from the SPCA outreach program and her very loveable dog Minnie (Labradoodle) came to see us. Minnie enjoyed all the attention from the residents.

~ Residents cast their votes at Peacehaven for the General Elections 2011 on the 15th of November.

~ Peacehaven residents and the staff appreciated the support given by the residents’ families who helped in giving Peacehaven a Christmassy look by bringing in their Christmas things, participating in craft work and spending time with us.

~ Ces Davison (right) celebrated his 89th birthday on the 15th with a cake made especially for him.
