Destination Helensville

Some months ago a caregiver by the name of Janet Hooper left Peacehaven to start a new life as a butcher in Helensville.
On the 30th of September, we decided it was time we paid her a visit.

Seven residents bundled up into the vans and travelled for the best part of an hour up to the township.

As they approached Helensville Meat Centre, Janet dashed out to greet her old friends and welcomed them in. The residents had a good look around and admired the old-fashioned meat scale in the window.  Janet’s husband then gave them a tour of the cool-store. He demonstrated the sausage-making process and explained all the different flavours they produce. Unfortunately the residents missed out on a sample of their trademark beef, pumpkin and leek sausages.

Everyone bought something from the shop- pork chops, steak and marinated chicken were favoured- and several packets of sausages to take home for the rest of the resident’s dinner.

It was too wet to eat their packed lunch at the park so Janet kindly invited them all back to her place where they picnicked and reminisced in her garage.

Finally the meat got packed into the vans and so it was home time for the happy travellers.

PS: The meat and sausages have since been cooked up and we can vouch that they are delicious!

Diwali

On the 15th the bright colours and sounds of Mumbai came to the dining room for our Diwali celebration.

The members of the audience were welcomed and the origins of Diwali were explained.

Following that a fashion show was held to show off each glittering sari. Everybody certainly dressed to impress!

Four lively dances performed by staff members had many people clapping to the beat of the music. The dancers came forward to the audience so that they could see their ornate gowns up close, and those with poor vision were able to feel the sequins and embroidered patterns.

Afternoon tea was of course Indian; samosas, deep fried onions, spring rolls, fish bites and chickpeas all served with a variety of spicy dipping sauces.

Other happenings

The combined churches of Blockhouse Bay put on another wonderful Evergreens Concert on the 27th.  Six of our residents attended.

Congratulations to Tangata Tomokino (right) who has successfully completed the ACE core program.
