September 2009

Celebrating Spring

It was a party akin to Christmas.

Tables were adorned with pink and white blossoms, fragrant cuttings, fancy wine flutes and individualised menus.

Banners and balloons hung at the entranceway. The dining room was alive with pink clothing of every hue.

Yes, the scene was well and truly set for Peacehaven’s Celebration of Spring luncheon.

The residents- some in pink shirts; necklaces; scarves and ribbons- assumed their seats to give thanks. Soon after, a most succulent meal (prepared by Carol and the team) arrived at each table. The moist chicken and roast vegetables were tucked into with glee. “Haven’t they gone to a lot of trouble!” remarked one.

Ann, accompanied by the ukulele, and Alan stepped in to provide us with some background music including “Oh Danny Boy” and “Home on the Range.”

After dinner was devoured, it was time for some hidden talents to be revealed. Peter read out two poems, and sung “English Country Garden”. Ola also recited her poem “Spring”.

Frances read a very sweet story about the “cracked-pots” of this world- about how the very things we regard as flaws are in fact the things that make us irreplaceable.

Dessert was then served in the form of pink ice cream, fresh fruit salad and pink wafers drizzled in chocolate sauce.

Alan asked two of our caregivers, Shmina Begum and Shivani Sindula, to come into the middle of the room. Unbeknown to them they were about to receive some great news- they had passed all nine modules of the Aged Care Education (ACE) program.

They were presented with their certificates and given special medallions to wear.

After dinner had been cleared away, a little pink fairy carrying a basket perched herself at the door to ensure every resident left with a “pinky” chocolate bar.

Just when everyone thought the day couldn’t get any better, the residents were ushered into the Kinross Lounge for another item. It was a belly dancing routine- performed by none other than our Enrolled Nurse Gill Seagar. She twisted and twirled around a shimmery pink sheet to Middle Eastern music. Some of the other staff members got in on the action at one point too.

It’s fair to say we were pretty pinked out by the end of the day! Thank you to everyone who organised this hugely successful event- the residents, visitors and staff had a marvellous day.

Introducing Diney

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new Registered Nurse, Diney Rowe. She is working 9am-3pm shifts Wednesday through Friday.

Diney trained at Greenlane Hospital where she specialised in Accident and Emergency nursing. She has joined us from Titirangi Family Healthcare where she still works one day a week as a practise nurse.

Taking care of her own mother fulltime for the final two years of her life has given Diney a special insight into aged care

She is married to Paul and has an eight-year-old daughter named Josie. In her spare time she enjoys listening to music, gardening and spending time with her cat and puppy.

We value her expertise as well as her warm and bubbly nature. Welcome Diney.

In other news ...

Twelve residents (pictured below) got to enjoy a buffet dinner at the new Valentines at Western Springs.

We attended two concerts: “Towering Heights and City Lights” in Botany Downs (featuring our own Ann McKenzie in the chorus) and “Are We There Yet?”; a selection of travelling songs performed by Hillsborough Primary School children.

Shuttle Board

The aim of the game is to use the stick to hit the shuttles into the highest scoring area (without hitting them off the board- this won’t score you anything). Each person gets four tries. The first round saw Phyllis taking the early lead and she was very happy to have come out with the win with over 700 points scored.

Christmas Matters

• Mark it in your diaries now: our Family Christmas Party will be held on the 26th of November at 4:30pm.

• If you have any old Christmas cards and/or decorations you no longer want, Frances would love to have them for craftwork. If you can help us please give them to Frances or drop them off at reception next time you come in.

Thank you to Amanda of Amanda4 Flowers on Blockhouse Bay Rd (Avondale) for teaching us how to make beautiful floral arrangements.

A note on money

At Peacehaven we endeavour to ensure that money (and other personal possessions) are to the best of our ability kept safe.

Whilst we take all care, we do not accept responsibility for loss of any money, bankcards, chequebooks or possessions. We do not advise residents to keep any valuables or money in their bedroom.

To all intents and purposes we run a “cashless society” in the facility to the extent that we pay for everything the resident needs and on-charge the amounts as appropriate. The only time a resident really needs cash is when they are taken to the shops by a friend or family member. We recommend that residents have their own insurance for personal effects.
