April 2010

Easter Bonnet Parade

A simply impressive array of designs came out for Peacehaven’s Easter Bonnet Parade.

Some had fluffy chickens sitting on broken eggshells attached to their hat; others had bright pink gauze, some multi-coloured feathers. Steve looked fit to be an Island King and Nell S looked fresh in Frangipani.

Judy Garland’s “Easter Bonnet Parade” was put on in the background as Frances guided the wearer around the room while giving a commentary of each design. The audience responded with applause and cheers.

After everyone had had their turn in the limelight, chocolate eggs were distributed for afternoon tea along with some simnel cake (traditionally served at Easter to celebrate the end of Lent fasting).

The creations were simply too lovely to be put away so they were hung on the wall for the following week for everyone to admire.

Vauxhall Tours

A fleet of vintage Vauxhalls came to pick the residents up for a drive on the 18th.

Remembering the Anzacs

We began our Anzac Day with a special tribute at morning tea. We sang “God of our Fathers”- lead by Ann and Carol in military uniforms. Ann gave a presentation of facts and photos, and spoke about her recent trip to the Churchill Museum in London.  The residents who were involved in the war were honored and medals were displayed.

A themed menu was served at lunch- all recipes coming from a genuine wartime recipe book. It was a special day that sparked many memories.

Future Bus Trips

For the last 20 years Dial-A-Ride-Transport (DART) have provided bus trips that have been subsidized.

As from the 1st of July 2010 the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) will no longer pay the DART subsidy unless our residents have a Total Mobility photo ID card.

The simple answer is for our residents to obtain a Photo ID card, however, that may come with some cost as you have to take out an annual membership to a Total Mobility Assessment Agency (e.g. CCS or Age Concern) then the Assessment Agency has to come and have a face to face assessment with the resident and they want to be paid for that as well. We are looking into the pros and cons of all this and will advise you of the best way forward in next months newsletter.
