Lynfield College Visit

We were delighted to have twenty-one enthusiastic students from Lynfield College’s “Gateway” programme to come and visit us on the 30th. Some of them visited this time last year and were very excited to catch up with the residents they had met previously- and others had never stepped inside a rest home before. They all dispersed themselves among the tables and chatted over morning tea. Then three guitarists serenaded us with “Stand by Me” and some lovely modern songs that young and old alike thoroughly enjoyed.

Winter Solstice Luncheon

On the 21st we had our annual Winter Solstice Luncheon. The tables were set with snowflake menus and floral arrangements.

A nice hot roast of pork and crackling with veges was served, followed by a Christmas-style pudding sitting in creamy custard sauce.

Marvellous Music

We had another visit from the Te Atatu Men’s Choir and a sing-along on the piano with Alan Pitts. Lynn the country signer continues to visit on Tuesday mornings.

Change to Asset Thresholds
for Residential Care

We have received confirmation from the Auckland District Health Board of the new thresholds coming into effect on the 1st of July 2011.

I wrote to many individual residents on the 22nd of June 2011 advising them of the changes in contract price and asset level.

The value of assets that you may retain (asset threshold) and still be eligible for subsidised residential care from 1 July 2011 are as follows:

  Asset level
A single or widowed person in care $210,000
Couples with both partners in care $210,000
Couples with one partner in care

Either $115,000
(house and care remains exempt)
Or $210,000 total assets

The changes to the asset thresholds may mean that the result of your financial means assessment has changed and you may qualify for a residential care subsidy. This means that the amount that you pay for your residential care could change.

If you wish to apply for a review of your financial means assessment to see whether the changes to the asset thresholds affect the amount that you have to pay for your residential care, please contact your local needs assessment and service co-ordination agency who will provide you with necessary application form. Alternatively, contact Specialised Processing Services at the Ministry of Social Development toll free on 0800 999 727.

The effect of any change to a financial means assessment will only be backdated for 90 days so it is in your best interests to apply for a review of your financial means assessment, should you wish to, as soon as possible.
